On a sunny Sunday recently, I hopped on my motorbike for a day trip to visit a friend in Hoi An. They had a new-to-me cafe to check out located down a tucked-away alley in the atmospheric old town. Venturing into this secret garden courtyard revealed a plant-lovers paradise – the Ancient Town Coffee and Restaurant.
With its open-air architecture, lush greenery, and chilled vibe, it’s a hidden gem. So today, photos and a story for you.

I navigated the winding backstreets of Hoi An to reach this inconspicuous cafe. Inside the entryway, stepping into the main courtyard felt like finding a tropical oasis in the city. A wide ground level deck with nice tables sprawled under a roll-back roof, dotted with hanging ferns and orchids.
We grabbed an coffees and picked a perfect spot to catch up while admiring the surroundings. The courtyard exuded a relaxed, carefree atmosphere. Leafy potted plants everywhere created a living decoration. Gentle music floated over the space, just audible over the gurgle of fountains.
After c
hatting for a while in the breeze, I wandered upstairs to discover even more plant magic. The sunny second floor was a greenhouse of succulents. On a personal note… Succulents show the power of perseverance. With their remarkable ability to thrive in harsh conditions, they remind me to keep pushing through challenges. Succulents endure scorching heat, direct sunlight, and thirst that would wilt other plants. Their plump, fleshy leaves store water and their waxy coatings prevent evaporation – adaptations evolved to survive arid climates. When circumstances get intensely difficult, succulents hunker down and carry on.
I think we can learn from these resilient plants. When confronting obstacles that seem too harsh, focus on adaptability, fortify your reserves, and keep going. Succulents show the beauty and possibility that waits on the other side of struggle. Just as succulents transform deserts into oases, we can turn trials into triumphs through dedication. Their enduring spirit demonstrates the strength we all possess inside.
Plump leaves and exotic flowers burst from every container. Paired with stunning rooftop views, this was an Instagrammer’s paradise.
While not ideal for laptop focused work, Ancient Town’s lush ambiance is perfect for unwinding.
The globally inspired menu provides tasty fuel for long conversations about life, philosophy, and future plans to change the world. You leave feeling refreshed.
Next visit, I definitely want to try their woodfired pizzas, which my friend told me about. The highlight is apparently a whimsical dragon pizza oven, combining culinary and visual art. Just another endearing touch for this bohemian cafe.
