Exploring Pedion tou Areos park in Athens, Greece

Hi Friends.

City parks provide a much-needed escape from the concrete jungle. They are like bubbles of relaxation in the city, offering a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle. Whether you are taking a walk, reading a book, or just sitting on a bench, city parks offer a place to unwind and escape the chaos of urban life. Public parks are a great place to get some fresh air, take a walk, and have a picnic. They’re also a great place to go when you’re looking for a place to romp around and have some fun.

For myself, I love going to public parks because they’re free, and I can always find a bench to sit on. I like to people watch and see all the different people who come to the park. I also like to walk around and explore all the different areas of the park… it is relaxing.

Pedion tou Areos, or “Field of Mars,” is a park in the heart of Athens, Greece. This 25-acre public green space is a favorite for locals and visitors alike, thanks to its playgrounds, ponds, performance spaces, and more.

Designed in 1934, its purpose was to honor the heroes of the Greek Revolution. Even though it was designed more than 80 years ago, the park is still a popular spot.

Yesterday, I strapped on my walking shoes and headed out to take a walk in the green. Join me on the adventure below!

This was the last street sign I saw before getting to the park… sorta a little off-putting to say the least, but it was only one more street intersection before the park!

When you get beyond the front gate you are greeted by an epic statue of ‘Constantine I of Greece’. Constantine I, King of Greece, is known for his many years of rule, and his dedication to his country. He is often praised for his efforts to modernize Greece, and for his work to improve the lives of his people. Now, pigeons and people sit next to him.

The park also features this statue of Athena Nike. Athena Nike was the goddess of victory. She was the daughter of Zeus and Metis, and was born from Zeus’ head fully grown and armed. She had many temples dedicated to her, and was a favorite of athletes and warriors.

The Athena Nike spear and shield are some of the most prized possessions of the goddess Athena. The spear is a powerful weapon that can be used to slay her enemies, and the shield is a sturdy armor that can protect her from harm. These powerful artifacts are a testament to the might of the goddess Athena.

City fountains shimmering in the sun are a beautiful sight. The water is so clear and the sun makes the water glisten. It’s definitely a sight to see.

I did not get so see the name of this statue, but it was next to an old church in the center of the park… it looked like someone did that whole, ‘Got your Nose’ thing, and real did take his nose. Perhaps that is how he died?

If you’re looking for a nice, relaxing walk, the park is perfect. But if you’re looking for something more akin to walking through a jungle, the park can still provide that too. With all the trees and bushes, it’s easy to forget you’re in the middle of a city.

There are sections for performances, sections for sports, sections for picnics, and even sections for just walking around and enjoying the scenery. It’s the perfect place to spend a day with family or friends.

This section of the park featured the 21 heroes of the Greek Revolution. It was a pleasant stretch of well maintained park to walk or sit in.

Here is one of the heroes a bit more close – up. He is also in a traditional Greek National Guard Uniform, and has a great mustache!

A lot of the park was overgrown with ivy and other vines. It was so thick in some areas that you couldn’t see the ground or signs.

As like much of Athens, the park had a lot of graffiti as well. While the wall art was cool, some taggers also painted over some of this…

In the north of the park, there was a big open area where you could play ball or skate, and people were just hanging out in their area enjoying the day.

I found myself getting lost on the paths and enjoying the experience of walking around a jungle in the city. The views of distant hills and blue skies put the mind at ease.

The sun shining through the trees on a beautiful day is one of the most wonderful things in the world. The light shining through the leaves creates a beautiful dappled pattern on the ground, and the sun’s warmth is a great way to warm up on a spring or summer day.

There were a lot of neglected sections in this park as well. The places I walked, through looked like they needed some love. But, that was also part of the charm of the park. I think, that it was raw, a bit wild, a bit untamed… but also welcoming.

And… cats… Cats… Always cats… Greece has a lot of them. Just about every city street… it is the city of cats.
